At a time, when there were no computers, there were font with specific size and type with single spacing, all these were basically common to the typewriters and electric typing machines either. Yet with the induction of computer, we availed a lot of fonts, with different font types and sizes. Yet in the specific documents, which require very clear writing needs mono spaced fonts like Courier of size 12.

The single biggest merit of mono spaced fonts is that, these fonts are very easier for formatting the documents, thus you don't feel any difficulty to change any format with this font. You can easily create forms either more rapidly. They also align readily, so they are useful in creating all types of forms that can be reproduced with ease. These types of fonts are usually used in all sorts of document creation, since they are simple to format and save easily.

The primary reason of selecting these mono spaces fonts is that these are critical to the ease of reading and printing. Design and basic art principle dictates that white space is not an enemy of a designer but his friend because white space provides the contrast ...
... and spot where the eyes can take a rest. The strategic use of white space will allow more acceptable design and layout.

As compared to other documents, where we employ different type of fonts, either complicated or decorative yet don't prefer to be lucid, and in the case of mono spaced fonts, we vitally ensure to select fonts which are lucid and clear. This sort of fonts is commonly used in office documents and other types of business communication that is created on site or off site. If you format documents in anything other than mono space, the output is not as clear nor aligned as a mono spaced font. This can be disastrous for any office personnel and for any type of document that is printed or created like this.

In the case of different types of document creation and reproduction, mono spaced fonts are ideal. You want to be able to read what is produced and be able to understand it. When you communicate with someone, you want them to be able to read and understand what is on the document. Yes you can format office documents with other fonts, but for true readability, using a mono font is your best bet. This essentially will ensure that there is no chance of confusion with this common font.
