One of the first things that stems into mind when you think of the state North Carolina is the city of Charlotte. This is the largest city in the state and is home to 1.7 million people. The most captivating thing about the city is its landscape, especially during the night. The sight of the skyscrapers, condos and houses side-by-side is breathtaking.

Amidst the scenic cityscape, there are still environmental issues that can damage the city's reputation. A perfect example of this would be sewage spills in Charlotte. Just last May 6, 2010 the Charlotte Beach Park was closed due to high levels of bacteria present in the water. The management advised the public not to enter the water until any further announcements.

If the water was contaminated with high concentrations of bacteria, this could cause illnesses and infections to the citizens of Charlotte. If the bacteria were to enter the system, whether ingested or entered through an open sore or cut, they could start a rash, cause diarrhea and vomiting.

The night before the beach was closed there was more than 10,000 gallons of raw sewage that spilled due ...
... to a broken line from the Fordham Waterway. This waterway line flows directly by the beach so when the pipe broke, it contaminated the water in effect.

The county Health Department of Charlotte, NC issued a sewage cleanup and restoration of the broken pipeline. The pipe was fixed three hours after a resident reported the matter. Operations manager of Charlotte County Utilities (CCU), James Huish, stated that the six-inch pipe had already a previous leak on it and that there was clamp bracing the leak. According to his suspicions, the salt water could have dissolved the clamp causing sewage to spew. The hole of the pipe has been repaired and the CCU does not see any possibility of having any more problems with it.

There is still no word whether or not the beach has been opened to the public. However, they did notify that sewage cleanups in Charlotte Beach Park were still being done days after the incident had occurred. It's relieving to know that the people of this town take great care of their surroundings.
