How do we account for the presence of these counterexamples or the fact that both the what and the where exist in either culture Hall and Ames have proposed "the Principle of Mere Presence" that is.

The importance of a particular belief or a set of ideologies in a culture depends not on its mere presence, but on whether it is "importantly present that is, present in such a way that it significantly qualifies, defines, or otherwise shapes the culture."

Hall and Ames further suggest that deploying this principle will allow them to Cheap Shoes focus on what is ...
... truly significant in shaping cultural sensibilities (Anticipating xv).

So, the importantly present in the West are what and its concomitant ideology, and the importantly present in China are the where and its concomitant ideology counterexamples or marginalized discourses notwithstanding.

However, in their efforts to recognize the presence of both what and the where in either culture, Hall and Ames have inadvertently set up another binary one that is between the importantly present and the other.

While significant differences do exist between these concepts, what gets overlooked or short-shrifted in the meantime is how the importantly present and the Other engage with each other at any given historical moment in time, and how the Other keeps pushing back and challenging the importantly present. After all, what is importantly present and what becomes other are discursively constructed, and they always exist in an interdependent, though often no less agonistic, relationship.

In this kind of relationship each vies for, and tries to maintain, an important presence in relation to the past and in anticipation of what lies ahead; and each further attempts to cast the other as different, if not as its very antithesis, or as heretic in want of being silenced or converted.

It is these kinds of interactions between the importantly present and the other that can be most revealing of how different social, cultural, and linguistic forces shape and impinge upon our rhetorical behaviors. Studying these kinds of interactions, in my view, provides a great opportunity to develop a more contextualized understanding of Chinese rhetoric and to conduct a more productive cross-cultural rhetorical work.

The urge to identify or stress the differences between what and the where are Shoes Online real and even perennial and my effort here to illustrate their dialogic relationship is not meant to deny this urge or their differences.

The portrayal of the what or the where as the Other or as "the not-so-importantly present" serves to secure or reinforce our conscious, or not-so-conscious, identification with a given community or culture, even though this kind of portrayal is frequently incomplete if not faulty or stereotypical, subsequently leading us to reject or resist that very Other.

Therefore, by suggesting that we ask both the "what" and the "where" questions in studying Chinese rhetoric, I want to call attention to the Chinese worldview that tends to privilege becoming over being or contingency of meaning over certitude of meaning. And I do want to spell out the underlying ideological and methodological differences associated with these two questions.

No less important, though, is the concomitant need to illustrate how the importantly present and the Other engage with each other in specific historical moments, and how their engagements or entanglements in turn reconstitute their relationship, culminating at times in making the Other the importantly present.

Further, these kinds of engagements can serve as a significant barometer of how social, cultural, and political crises are being responded to and resolved and how new meanings and new discursive conditions are being created and further activated and elevated.
