Best Ways To Raise Your Guinea Pigs
When I started out with raising guinea pigs, I knew so little about their care. I sort of learned the ropes as I went along and now I can say that I have become adept at everything that concerns guinea pigs. I decided to share whatever knowledge I have about raising guinea pigs to those who are thinking about having them as pets. So following are some information and tips on how to raise and care for guinea pigs.
Are they right for me?
This should be considered before you take them home with you. They live for up to 5-8 years so you need to be ready to care for them that long. They would also need your attention and time so be prepared to spare time for them.
Another thing that you have to remember is that they are happier when they have company. If left alone, they ten to get lonely and suffer from depression and other ailments. Raise guinea pigs in pairs but not necessarily male/female because they multiply easily. You can have them in an all boys and all girls group or pair a young guinea pig with an old one.
You need to provide your guinea pigs with a large hutch, at least 4 feet by 2 feet ...
... for a pair because they love to run around and play. Guinea pigs don't adapt well to cold temperatures and must be insulated against it. In winter they need to be placed indoors but you can always bring them outside again during spring and summer. Guinea pigs need to be fed at least two times a day and have to be cleaned regularly to avoid getting them smelly. It is important that they are always clean because they love to be picked up and cuddled. They are shy animals and you need to spend time with them in order to have them get used to you.
What is the best food for guinea pigs?
Hay and grass are their main dietary staple but you can give them dried food and fresh green vegetables and fruits. Supply them with clean fresh drinking water to make them healthy.
In the morning, it is best to give them dried food while in the afternoon, vegetables and fruits are ideal. You don't have to give them whole fruits and vegetables, peelings from the food you prepare for your family are okay to feed them. You can give them treats and see which food they like best. Feeding them by hand will make them get used to you. Guinea pigs are ideal pets to have even for families that have children.
When selecting a guinea pig house for your pet guinea pig, consider a pre-fabricated hutch which comes with panels that are pre-constructed and just require assembly. These guinea pig cage can be found at GuineaPigHutch.com.au.
