Some would be considered travelers with an explicitly stated purpose for their journey, while others would be considered strictly tourists seeking pleasure through the act of travel. Yet even among these categories, goals and interests varied. Travelers came to the region for business, government functions, or military service; tourists came for sightseeing, adventure, health, education, or the visitation of family and friends.
