Skin Scar Treatment
If you suffer from unsightly scars, you may want to take some time to learn about your treatment options. Scars are a normal part of life for many people, easily obtained through a persons everyday affairs. Scars are caused when the skin is separated by cuts, burns, or tears. The result is the bumpy, reddened appearance of skin that is created through over-production of collagen. The collagen works to naturally repair the damage by the body, but it can leave its mark. Scars can be raised and lumpy, or appear in many colors, sizes and depths. The type of lotion, cream, pad or surgery you need for your skin scar treatment depends on the severity of the scar.
Available for the most severe scars are surgical options. Laser dermabrasion is one option, as is chemical dermabrasion, both of which remove the top layers of skin from the scar to reveal the smoother skin underneath. The new skin will be sensitive to heat and cold, and will need to be protected from the suns harmful rays. Certain strong acids may be recommended to peel away the layers of scarring that cover normal skin, administered only by a physician. Generally, ...
... it takes several weeks to several months to see the benefits of the surgery. Side effects from this surgery include peeling of the treated skin, as well as redness and swelling. Other physician-administered treatments include collagen injections, which aid in the bodys own natural collagen production along to quickly heal the scar. Steroid injections are also occasionally used to lessen the appearance of scar tissue.
Another important methods of healing scars is an anti inflammatory agent, such as NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). This skin scar treatment may be recommended at the early stages of a scar, as they have been shown to reduce the maturation speeds of scar tissue.
Your physician may even suggest skin grafts for the worst kinds of scarring, where your bodys healthy skin is harvested to replace that of badly scarred skin tissue. This is an extreme option, and is a complicated plastic surgery. Examine your options carefully with your physician before deciding on an extreme treatment measure.
Other, less-severe scars, may benefit from use of over-the-counter non-surgical products. These include vitamin creams and gels, such as those found with vitamin C and vitamin E. Both can help soften the hardness of scar tissue, and when used with a kneading technique, can actually break down the collagen fibers in the scar, enabling the affected area to closer resemble healthy skin, free of lumpy collagen fiber. There are low-level acids that may be purchased at the drug store or online, that can peel off the top layers of scarring, revealing healthy skin underneath. Other non-prescription remedies include silicone gel, which can be rubbed right into the affected area, or as silicone-engorged pads, that can be cut to size and placed right over the scar. This skin scar treatment works effectively as silicone softens the skin, denies oxygen to the scarred area, and provides a warm barrier than can help break down the fibrous nature of the over-productive collagen.
