Economic Characteristics Between Hispanics And Non-hispanic Whites
An examination of economic characteristics of Hispanics and non-Hispanic whites in the Hispanic/white tracts lends evidence to the inability of the most disadvantaged whites to relocate to the suburbs. Non-Hispanic white median household income was only $22,340 versus $30,073 for Hispanics and median housing values and median rents were also lower for non-Hispanic whites. Educational levels and the percentage of the labor force employed in professions (which generally pay Wholesale Jewelry higher wages than employment in the manufacturing or service sectors) of non-Hispanic whites were greater than Hispanics, but given that only 10.9% of non-Hispanic whites were foreign-born and 97.6% spoke English well, the slightly higher educational levels are not surprising.
This part of Detroit was a settlement for poor whites from Appalachia. In a study of whites in southwestern Detroit during the mid 1990s, Hartigan (1999) found that many whites did not desire to reside in the suburbs even if they could afford to and that white professionals moved to southwestern Detroit for the ethnic ...
... heterogeneity. A comparison of economic characteristics between Hispanics in the Hispanic/white versus the mixed tracts reveals no major differences. Given that median housing incomes and median rents are similar between the two tract typologies, it is not surprising that other characteristics of these Hispanics are similar. The Hispanic population in southwestern Detroit expanded at the expense of the non-Hispanic white population between 1990 and 2000 suggesting the process of urban succession. Whereas only two census tracts had at least 50% of their populations claiming Hispanic ancestry in 1990, by 2000 10 tracts could claim such. It may be that the enclave provides a staging ground for Chanel Jewelry new arrivals, as well as an ethnic community for more settled immigrants. Spatially, the Hispanic population is hemmed in by an established non-Hispanic black population to the east, financially unable to compete for better housing in other parts of the study area.
On the west it is constrained by the Arab enclave, which contains some of the most expensive housing stock in the study region, a factor that prohibits most Hispanics from entering these nearby tracts. Therefore, the urban succession process seeks the path of least resistance which is north and south of the established Hispanic tracts. The majority of non-Hispanic whites who had the financial resources to relocate, apparently had done so en masse between 1990 and 2000, leaving the remaining non-Hispanic whites who are either uninterested in relocating to the suburbs or unable to compete for more expensive housing in the suburbs.
