Progressive cavity pumps are a category of Positive Displacement Pump. These are one of the top drive motors and also referred to as a progressing cavity pump. Some of the manufacturers also like to refer to these pumps as cavity pump or eccentric screw pump. The basic function of progressive cavity pumps is to transfer fluid via moving through the pump. This pump is of a series of cavities small in size, with fixed shape and discrete cavities. These top drive motors work as the rotor is turned.

Progressive cavity pumps are responsible for making volumetric flow rate proportional to the rate of rotation (bi-directionally). Lower shearing levels are applied to the pumped fluid. This is also the reason that these pumps have the main purpose of metering fluid and viscous/shear sensitive material pumping. The cavities of these top drive motors tend to taper down toward their ends. Thereafter these motors overlie with their neighbors. This results in zero pulsing due to the arrival of cavities at the outlet.

Progressive cavity pumps acts as a motor as soon as the fluid is pumped through the interior. Some of the applications ...
... also include well drilling. The pump also consists of a helical rotor and a twin helix. These are double the wavelength and twice the diameter of helical hole existing in a rubber stator. The rotor works towards sealing tightly against the rubber stator while it rotates. This results in the formation of a set of cavities with fixed size in between. The cavities progress once the rotation of the rotor begins. However, the shape or volumes of the cavities remain same. The pumped material remains in motion in the cavities.

The theory of pumping technique of top drive motors is usually misinterpreted. Often the process is believed to occur due to a forceful effect caused via friction or drag against the screw rotor teeth movement. However the truth is that it is caused due to the sealed cavities, such as a piston pump. This is also the reason that it possesses similar operational characteristics. For instance, they can pump easily even at extremely low rates and to high pressure.

The sliding tends to seals between cavities au high pressure. This will result in leakage of some fluid. Hence, a longer pump having more cavities is considered more effective when pumping against high pressures. Each seal requires dealing with pressure difference connecting adjacent cavities.

The rotor rotation makes it roll around the inner surface of the hole. The rotor motion remains similar to the smaller gears in the planetary gears system. The simultaneous rotation and movement of the rotor results in the collective movement of the drive shaft mounted eccentrically. Typically, the rotor should be driven through a set of universal joints to facilitate movement.
