For an animal to be happy he must be provided with all his basic needs and one of these is to have a roof upon his head. Guinea pigs need a place where they can play and stay in comfort. They are usually kept in cages or hutches and it is where they spend most if not all of their time.

For the owner, the hutch is only a place to keep the guinea pigs so that they don't run away and get lost and to keep them safe from harm. For the guinea pigs however, it is much more. It is their home, a place where they spend all of their time. They eat there, play there, sleep and even go potty there.

You can find the right hutch for your guinea pigs at your local pet store. You have to choose a hutch that is big and spacious to make your pets comfortable in it. You don't have to buy a very big one though if you only plan to have 2 guinea pigs, get one just enough to accommodate the two pets that you are having.

In choosing the right hutch, stay away from hutches that have wire floors because these are not very safe for them. If you can find a hutch with a plastic bottom which can be detached for easy cleaning, the better ...
... off you and your pets will be.

You also have to make sure that the door of the hutch is wide and big enough to enable your hand to move things around easily. This is necessary so that you will not have a hard time when feeding them or giving them water to drink.

A single guinea pig would require a space of seven and a half square feet while two guinea pigs would need a hutch that measures ten and a half feet. This is the standard size but you can always get a much bigger hutch for them. This would allow them to play and exercise so that they don't get fat and have health problems.

Timothy hay is the best bedding to provide in the hutch. It is safe for the guinea pigs to munch on and play with. You can also use other kinds of hay as long as you give a constant supply to your pets. Give your pets toys and hiding spots inside the hutch. This will add to their activities and make them healthy and happy. A happier and healthier guinea pig means more entertaining and lovelier to behold.
