As a small business owner, you probably devote some time perusing the paper and other publications looking for the latest business news that might have an impact on your own organization. How many times have you run across an article that talked about a news event at one of your competitors? Odds are the paper didn't send a reporter to find out that your competitor just opened a new branch office; your competitor most likely sent a well-crafted press release to land that coverage.

Press releases are an excellent tool to get your company name out in front of people.Press releases will not only build brand recognition but will build credibility as well simply because the news appears in a trusted source.

If you would like to get in on that publicity but you don't have the foggiest how to write press release articles, consider these tips. First, if you have it in the budget, use a professional to write your release. These pieces have to be newsy and require a journalistic skill that is different from the typical marketing style.

Identify ...
... where you are going to submit the releases and fully understand their terms and conditions. Know who or how to submit a press release and what you can and cannot include. There's no sense in composing a release if it doesn't meet the standards of the news distributor.

How to write a good press release is just as important as what to write.Remember this is a news article, not a sales page, and it is important to recognize that news organizations use the inverted triangle style of writing.Basically that means the lead paragraph has to convey the most important part of the news in three lines or less then should be followed up with a more detailed description. This allows the news outlet to edit effectively.

In your lead paragraph you should answer the who, what, why, when, where and how of your story. For example Box Brothers announces the November 1 opening of their new shipping materials store in Brentwood to serve their customers on the north side of town. Keep the sentences short and simple with a natural flow. You can expound on each of those elements in following paragraphs.

Well-done press releases can yield big benefits for your business.
