Sample Credit Dispute Letter
Creating a sample credit dispute letter to have on hand for future reference is always a smart idea. Having the sample will make it easier for you to write to creditors in the future if it is ever needed.
Having a credit dispute letter creates the opportunity for you to raise your credit score by demonstrating that you have been wronged. Whether the wrong is due to a credit bureau error or a credit card problem, you will make a great effort to correct it.
Start out with your name and address at the top left corner. Below that, put the name and address of either Credit Card Company or credit bureau. Then put the date and then below that place a polite, business-like greeting.
Begin with something similar to this for the body:
I am writing in regards to a dispute that I have with the XYZ Credit Agency, dated March 1st, 2009, that I recently found on my credit report. I find this deeply disturbing that something can be erroneously reported and ruin my credit in such a manner.
While I understand that there are laws for credit card companies and credit bureaus to follow, it disturbs me that this ...
... could slip through the cracks and happen. My credit record, which was nearly perfect, has now been completely decimated by this event, and my lifestyle totally messed up as well (or something along these lines).
I am enclosing the following items to show why I am disputing the problem (error). By looking at the following items, you will see why the validity of my claim is correct. I would greatly appreciate your immediate attention to this matter, as it has impacted my life in a very negative manner (explain howâ€were you denied another credit card, mortgage, car loan, etc.)
I would appreciate your timely attention to this matter. Thank you ahead of time for everything that you do.
Sincerely,
xxxxxxxxx
Of course, this sample is just a loose idea of how to write the sample credit dispute letter. Things in the letter can be changed easily to suit your situation.
If your situation is for a specific credit card that had multiple charges that were in error, change your dispute letter to reflect that. Be specific in your statements about what is wrong, and if possible, include a police reportâ€especially if it’s been stolen.
On the other hand should your situation involve multiple credit bureau mistakes, you will need to spend some time with the credit bureaus, and be specific in each letter that you write. Be detailed in each credit dispute letter that you write to them, and rewrite it several times, if you need to. As a matter of fact, rewriting it at least once is a very good idea.
Creating a sample dispute letters is really not as intimidating as you might think it is. All it really requires is some time, a bit of thought, and organization. Line all of your information up, be prepared for questions, and then wait for the results.
