Pets are good to have and there are many animals that people keep as pets, from dogs to cats to hamsters and horses. Some even keep exotic animals like snakes and spiders as pets but very few have used chickens as pets. This is because chickens are seen by many as a source of nourishment, they are to be butchered and eaten or made to produce eggs for our consumption. But then there are attributes of chickens that make them suitable to keep as pets. For one, they are friendly and are easy to maintain and keep. Listed below are some chicken breeds that are ideal to keep as pets.

Jersey Giant

As the name suggest, this breed originated in the US. Originally meant to replace turkeys as the main source of poultry meat, it is the biggest breed of chicken ever. Despite its size, this breed is very friendly which makes them ideal to keep as pets.

Brahma

Like most chicken breeds, Brahma was meant to provide meat and eggs even during winter. Then they are more often used as ornaments because of their strength and attractiveness. Today they are very popular as pets.

Mille Fleur

More popularly ...
... known as Bantam chicken, this breed is the most commonly used as pets. They are friendly, allowing themselves to be petted and even to ride on shoulders. They have very attractive colors which make them favorite pets.

Cochin

What sets this breed apart are its rich feathers and its size. Cochin chickens can have different colors and are therefore beautiful to look at. They also make good foster hens for other breeds of chicks that don't have any hens.

Australorps

A native of Australia, this breed is well built, docile and a good meat and egg producer. They are friendly which makes them ideal to keep as pets even for children.

Ameraucana and Auracana

This breed is very popular with kids. They produce eggs in different shades of blue and their feathers have very interesting patterns. This breed also has a Bantam variety in addition to its original size.

These chicken breeds are very unlike chickens that you usually see at chicken farms. Chickens that are raised in farms are also gaining popularity as pets because they are friendlier and are used to having humans around. Farm raised chickens that are already being used as pets are Leghorns, Sebrights, and Andalusians. Whatever breed you choose to have as your pet will surely give you all that you want in a pet just like your pet dog or cat.
