The problem comes, predictably, in the story of the physical facts of the manuscript. When describing physical detail like handwriting, pagination, and the appearance of the paper, our authors add enormously to the work of James Holly Hanford and Maurice Kelley.

This description is very difficult the manuscript is a mess with professional scribes using several different hands each; additions on paper glued to the margins; erratic pagination systems; and poor quality, significantly-damaged paper.

Worse, many of the original sheets cut in half and folded to form folio leaves were further halved by wear or cutting and are now mounted on guards, leaving the original quiring and order of the leaves ambiguous.

Luckily, the authors had astonishing access to the manuscript it was even disbound for study of the original binding and to examine the barely visible watermarks (folding the half-sheets originally put the watermarks in the gutter as in standard quarto format, and now, the guards partially block view of the watermarks).

Alas, the authors fail to apply the watermark evidence to the authorship debate, evidence that could break, if not make, their case. The improved access allowed the authors to identify nine (or eight) watermarks (I conflated five very similar coats of arms).

Unfortunately, their watermark descriptions have no evidentiary value. Neither the dimensions of the watermarks nor the distance of the watermarks to the chain lines is given (let alone a photograph with a rule); thus, one cannot date or identify the watermarks.

Nor are all locations of each watermark given (only which appeared in which chapter), eliminating important evidence for the original composition (including time-line, location, insertions, and deletions) and binding.

The deficient execution of watermark evidence eliminates its value for the authorship question: identification of the watermarks could date them or connect them to paper in other Milton documents. The date is critical: a Shoes Online date before Milton's blindness (a real possibility based on my limited analysis of the watermarks) would virtually preclude Milton's authorship.

As with the Hitler Diaries, the physical evidence is critical to the question of authorship: though the provenance of the manuscript carries substantial positive weight for Milton's authorship, the evidence from stylometrics, Latin style, and theology is inconclusive. The debate remains open.
