How often you should change the filter on your heating and cooling unit is an important question that many don't know the answer to. This will depend somewhat upon the system that you have installed, as well as other factors, but there are some guidelines that you can follow to ensure that you change the filter when it needs to be changed, because a dirty air filter in your heating and cooling unit can cause wear and tear on your system, and will allow dirty air to enter your home or business which could cause problems for those with allergies.

The first factor that you need to take into consideration is what kind of area that you live in. Local pollution can be a major determining factor in how often you should change your air filter. In some areas, where pollution is at its heaviest, especially if you live near an industrial area, you should check your air filter once a week or every two weeks and change it every thirty to forty-five days. Not changing your air filter regularly enough will cause it to get blocked which will mean that the air is not able to leave or enter your home.

Smoking inside your home ...
... can cause the same problems as living in a highly polluted area. If you live in a house where people smoke then you should check your filter weekly and make sure that it is not blocking the air from traveling. You don't want the smoke trapped inside your house any more than you want the pollution and particles from the outside air in your house. Changing your filter when required is a vital part of keeping your home or businesses place air free of pollutants and keeping clean, breathable air available.

Most experts believe that you should change your air filter every thirty days, and although some may balk at the cost of buying a new air filter every thirty days, what most people don't take into consideration is that when you have a dirty air filter your air conditioner or heating unit must work harder to push the air through the filter which can increase your heating and air conditioning costs. Changing an air filter is actually a cost-cutting solution to heating or cooling your home and can save you money.

Knowing when your air filter is dirty is your first step. You should begin by pulling out the filter and see if it is covered with dust particles to determine if it needs changing. If the air filter is dirty and looks like it is blocking the air trying to push through, and it has been thirty days since your last change then you should probably put in a new one. If you don't want to guess you can get air filter change indicators that are mounted on the side of your unit and tells you when your air filter needs changing, by means of certain kind of indicator.
