Jane has a pretty normal life as far as teens go. She has a half brother named Luke and a brother and sister named Zander and Carmella. She lives next door to some of the most eccentric neighbors on earth (they actually collect sounds). And she never, ever takes any responsibility for her actions. It isn't like she never has anything bad happen to her, but when it does, she knows the perfect person to let it all out on. Enter Jane's imaginary enemy. That's right, an imaginary enemy, one that throws screwballs at her whenever things seem to be going well! Jane has been writing letters to this enemy, Bubba, since second grade when he spilled milk on the floor in the cafeteria and let everyone laugh at her.
Jane has lived a sweet life as the Lee Jeans biggest self-proclaimed slacker alive. She doesn't do her homework and is a frequent receiver of the famous parent lectures about shaping up her behavior. Jane has spent years building up the front that nothing matters to her, but now that she is getting older and transitioning from middle school to high school, she finds it harder ...
... and harder not to care. Jane's high school career turns out to be relatively uneventful, and she begins to feel like she may just have it all figured out, but a string of events sends her mind spinning and makes her question her own sanity! One day, after a few crummy events and a few choice letters to her imaginary enemy, she receives a letter in the mail. When she doesn't recognize the handwriting on the envelope, she gets very curious, and when she finally opens the letter, she reads something that she would never have expected in a million years: I've taken your abuse for years.... Your constant whining, complaining, and blaming has worn me slap out. Regrets, Bubba (p. 197)
How could an imaginary enemy possibly write back Jane is flabbergasted and has no idea what to make of it! Then, after a short time passes, she receives another letter only this time Bubba requests a little face time with Jane! She freaks! Will she actually be able to face her longtime nemesis and in doing so will she finally be able to face her life and begin to accept responsibility for it. The book features small vignettes centered on different periods of Jane's life, which make for a very Calvin Klein Jeans easy and fast paced read. Although the plot may seem to be somewhat cliché, there are plenty of juicy twists that will have you staying up to read just one more chapter only to be reeled back in by another letter to or from Bubba. It is a must read for the "reluctant reader" in every classroom, easily relatable and quite funny throughout!
