There is also the matter of wear and tear on your vehicles. Minicabs cover a massive amount of miles every year and this will result, very regularly, in worn or broken components. Brake pads, gearboxes and clutches on taxis all do far more work than those on a ‘normal car' and will need to be replaced frequently as a result. This can be a very costly business and, if you are not getting as many fares as you would like, then it can make a big difference to your profits.

It is also important to have a good level of minicab insurance cover for your vehicles. Taxi drivers put themselves in far more danger than most other drivers because they are on the road for so many hours each day. The longer we spend behind the wheel of a car, the greater our chances will become of being involved in a collision. Even if we are exceptionally careful drivers, there are still plenty of other car owners out there who are not.

For instance, just imagine how hot you get when you are sat around waiting for fares in the middle of summer. ‘But modern cars are fitted with air conditioning.' You point out. Well yes, most of them are; but you can hardly sit with your engine running every time you stop!

However, one of the very largest dangers to be involved with minicab work has yet to be touched upon. It is a constant, niggling fear of any taxi driver and it is also one of the main reasons for having proper insurance for a minicab... it is robbery. When you are picking people up, you can never be totally sure of your safety.

Thankfully, being robbed at knifepoint for your takings is not an everyday occurrence, but it is still a frightening possibility. If this ever does happen to you, then there is only ever one sensible option; give them the money! Being a hero is not worth the risk; your life is far more important than a few hundred pounds worth of fares.

So, you are probably beginning to see that running a minicab business isn't quite as ‘cushy' as you thought! In fact, it is full of risks, stress, expense and plenty of good old-fashioned hard work.
