It wasn't so many years ago that we would have needed to get our quotes by ringing around several different companies. Not only was this a time-consuming exercise, but it could add quite a bit extra to your quarterly phone bill! You would also find yourself having to fend off over-enthusiastic agents a lot of the time which could rapidly become pretty tedious.

Well, thankfully those days have now long gone. This is the twenty-first century and we have the huge convenience at our fingertips that is called ‘The Internet'! Searching for an insurance policy is now fast, simple and completely free of pushy sales staff. But, is there a recommended way of finding your insurance online? Not everyone out there is a wizard on their computer and it can all seem a bit daunting the first time around...

Here are a few of the basics if you have never shopped for your vehicle cover on the Net -

Be Prepared
It is important that you have all of your vehicle's documentation to hand. Most insurers will want plenty of details before giving you a quote and you will need to know the answers!

Look Around ...
... Thoroughly
Don't restrict your searching to price comparison sites. Not all insurers will be shown in their results and you may well be missing out on a really good deal! Think of a few well-known companies and have a look at their own websites.

The Cost/Cover Ratio
You will soon discover that it's actually quite easy to find a low quote for your vehicle... but will it give you an adequate degree of cover? There are always plenty of ‘cheap as chips' policies out there, however, many of these will only give you a feeble amount of protection! With insurance it is often worth paying a little bit extra to make sure you get a more comprehensive policy.

Do Your Revision!
Before making any final decisions on a policy it is very important to read through the finer details. And the great thing about shopping for your insurance online is that there will be plenty of information. Whatever type of policy you are looking at should tell you exactly what is/is not covered.

Is Your Vehicle ‘Special'?
It can be surprisingly difficult to find cover for certain vehicles. For example, many companies are not keen on insuring motorhomes or vans. If you do have this problem, then you are best looking online for a specialist insurer as they will normally come up with a far more realistic quote. If you compare van insurance prices between several companies, then you will see just how large a variation there can be.
