Sammi has never really belonged to any certain group. She is a drifter who has acquaintances in all the cliques but has never really belonged to one. Things change when she meets TQ, Caryn, Letty, and Katsuko, however. These girls, all former loners, find themselves joining together to form a group of their own. Each girl is different from the rest but instead of their individuality pushing them apart, it draws them closer together. TQ is a tall, beautiful girl, who is rather shy; Letty is a Latino girl, who has recently come out of the closet; and Katsuko comes from a strict family and is a terrific swimmer. Everyone except Sammi has the design tattooed onto her skin, but Sammie finds that she just can't do it. She backs out much to the dismay of the others. After this she finds herself cast out of the group, and she loses the only true friends she has ever had.

Soon, strange things start to happen to the girls. They start to act out, they smoke, they party hard, and they start to skip school. They even beat up Sammi when she interrupts a fight. The girls are not the same girls that Sammie once knew and loved. Catching a glimpse of the tattoo on one of the girls, Sammi sees that it has spread and is taking over the girl's body. This book is definitely an engaging page turner. Although the beginning of the story seems innocuous enough, later there is some material not suitable for younger readers. Drug use, language, and some violence make this an appropriate read for ages 15 and up.
