On the coast of Cyprus lies the lovely town of Paphos, one of the Mediterranean''s top locations, frequented by visitors from all over the world who come to enjoy the sun, sea and sand as well as to indulge in the rich, thriving culture and heritage which dates back all the way to the ancient times. The birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite, Paphos plays a key part in the stories of Greek mythology, and captivates so many for precisely that legacy.

Paphos itself is comprised of two parts, with the coastal resort as well as the main town slightly further inland. The great thing about staying in Paphos itself is that you can take a flight straight to the town''s airport rather than having to make lengthy transfers to other parts of the island.

The rich history of Paphos is a draw for visitors from across Europe, and the city is especially popular with German, English and Scandinavian tourists. Indeed, there are so many well preserved historical attractions and remnants in Paphos that the entire town is listed by UNESCO on the World Cultural Heritage list.

Elsewhere you can enjoy all the great local food and ...
... drink at fine restaurants, whilst if you head for the Byzantine fort of Paphos castle you''ll not only get to see an incredible structure but also be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the sea and the surrounding region.

The Tombs of the Kings are only a short walk from the harbour. Still being explored to this day, they are open for you to look inside, all parts of a marvellous necropolis which has been dated back nearly two and a half millennia.

With well-preserved mosaics on display which date back to ancient Greece and show great scenes from Greek mythology, as well as early Christian catacombs such as the legendary Saint Solomini Church, there is so much around for you to explore when you make your visit.

As well as all this, there is an abundance of fine Mediterranean cuisine on offer at the excellent bars and restaurants there for you to visit. If you want instead to relax on the beaches, there is something for you, even for water sports enthusiasts too or anyone who wants to try their hand at windsurfing, diving and sailing.

For a great escape into another world and another time, as well as a great holiday in the sun, Paphos is the ideal choice. Bonny Kominek is a travel writer with a fondness for Mediterranean travel. They recommend Octopus Travel for Paphos hotels.
