Take A Bath

Located in the north-eastern corner of Somerset, easy to access thanks to its situation on the Bristol to London train line, the city of Bath is a popular resort for visitors from both home and abroad, frequented by all kinds of travellers looking to find an iconic, quintessentially British destination. Indeed its status as one of the only cities across the world to be categorised in its entirety as a World Heritage site only serves to add to its renown.
Bath has kept its status as an important cultural and political location for nigh on two thousand years. During the Roman occupation of this island, they built a network of baths around a thermal spring at this site and constructed a temple for worship of the goddess Sulis. The town grew around the baths, and this became a top place to visit for all those who were suffering with illness, believing as they did that the healing properties of the spring would help them.
A town soon built up and Bath became a major destination for people hoping to cure themselves of various illness due to the healing properties of the springs.
As other towns around the country ...
... grew and came to prominence, Bath ? with its rather distant location ? fell out of the history books and lost its place. It was not until the Georgian period from the eighteenth century that the city re-emerged as an important place, as a large programme of building work led to the erection of some striking examples of the period''s architecture, many of which are recognisable to visitors from all over the world. The Royal Crescent, Queen''s Square and the Circus have featured in documentaries and films so often that tourists sometimes feel a profound familiarity with the city when they first step off the coach.
The glorious cityscape really does come into its own in the summer months. On sunny days there is nothing better than walking around Bath, seeing the sights and taking time out in the Parade Gardens or relaxing by the waterfront.
Generous hospitality and good service is on offer at hotels all over Bath, wherever you find yourself staying. Moreover you may be able to get a good deal if you book somewhere in advance.
More and more people in Britain have lately been staying at home for their holiday, rather than heading abroad. This is a trend which Bath has naturally been able to benefit from, seeing increase in visitor numbers.
More than most other cities in the UK, Bath is always popular and always busy, but it keeps its serene atmosphere and is quite simply a splendid place to go and visit. Bonny Kominek is a freelance travel writer with a fondness for UK based travel. They recommend Octopus Travel for Bath hotels.
