Things To See And Do On Your Holiday To Sorrento
Sorrento is a small town in southern Italy in the Campania region about 50 km south of Naples, and is a popular tourist destination. In easy reach of both Naples and Pompeii by regular train, Sorrento sits on a long cliff overlooking the Bay of Naples.
There are two sides to Sorrento, the old town and the new town, with a split down the middle in the way of a ravine. The old town has much to see in the way of archaeology and ancient Roman architecture, while the new town is home to popular hotels, bars and modern holiday facilities.
The old town is laid out just as the Romans left it, narrow streets in the classic Roman grid formation. Sorrento hotels are a good base from which to explore the main attractions of the Bay of Naples, notably Pompeii, the famous volcano of Vesuvius and the rest of the picturesque Amalfi coast.
There is much to do in Sorrento itself during your stay. The main street in town is called the Via San Cesareo, and a walk in the cool evening air down the Via San Cesareo and other streets in the old town is the perfect preparation for dinner, and you will find endless delicious eateries ...
... in the area.
You will find the Sedile Dominova in the old town, a beautiful old building with bags of character, which was built in 1349. The Church of San Francesco in the piazza San Francesco hosts free art exhibitions in the summer, and you may catch the odd free concert if you are lucky too.
Spectacular views can be had from all over Sorrento thanks to its cliff top setting. With particularly beautiful views to be had at sunset, you can clearly make out the giant Mount Vesuvius, the volcano that once destroyed Pompeii. While the rocky coastline does not allow for many sandy beaches down below, you can still laze under the sun by the seaside on one of the many piers, where you can rent deck chairs and loungers.
If you are considering visiting some of the Bay of Naples attractions, it is probably advisable not to try reaching them in a rented car as many of the roads in the region are narrow and vertiginous, and the local driving style is bold, to say the least. Taxis can be rented, there is a good bus service, and the rail links in the region are good and probably present the best way to travel. Our guide to the attractions of Sorrento was written by Bonny Kominek, an experienced travel agent. They recommend checking the Octopus Travel website for details of the latest deals on Sorrento hotels and flights all year round.
