My buddy and I were grabbing a bite at Nick's Pizza the other day and we noticed something interesting. There seems to be more of those Queens movers vans on the road these days. We wondered if the increase in moving vans might be because of the economy. Jobs do seem to be hard to come by these days, but have things really gotten that bad? Apparently, yes.

Even though Queens seems to still be hustling and bustling, we have noticed that the restaurants and coffee shops don't seem to be as busy as usual. People seem to walk more or take the bus or subway as opposed to taking a taxi across town. Instead of hiring Queens movers, you see men walking down the streets carrying furniture and mattresses to their new homes that aren't far way. The homeless rate is obviously higher than in previous years. There even seem to be fewer pet walkers on the streets. Yes, once you start looking for the changes, you notice quickly that they are there.

Sadly enough, the more we looked for signs of changes, the more signs we noticed. We walked down Astoria Avenue and could not believe that there was a Queens movers van at almost ...
... every block, indicating that a business had to close up shop. Boutiques, shops and eateries that have been as much a part of this borough as the people themselves were no longer in existence. Even the groves of street vendors seemed to be more sporadic.

New York has been through so much in the past that it is hard to see the downturn in the economy take such an effect on our State and its Burroughs. New Yorkers are fighters though, so we will survive and be stronger for it. I just hope it happens soon.
