Ways To Kill Different Insects With Boric Acid
Commercial insecticides are usually not good for humans because of the chemicals they contain. However, there is a popular chemical that can be used as an insect buster but is safe for humans. When people started mining boric acid in Mojave Desert, they started to discover its secrets. Since then people have seen its insecticidal properties being used to eliminate cockroaches, ants, and terminates. Boracic acid (its other name) is actually popular as a cheap chemical for controlling annoying insects and pests at home. It kills by dehydrating the bodies of these little critters without exhibiting toxic effects on humans.
The compound is safe to humans and an evidence of this is its incorporation in anti-fungal and anti-bacterial ointments. For Ant Control
Ants can infest our food supplies at home and they become such an irritation. Try mixing a tablespoon of boracic acid to 1 teaspoon of sugar and 4 ounces of water (that's half a cup). Dip cotton in this solution and place the cotton balls in places where there are a lot of ants.
For Termites
The acid should be mixed with a non-toxic antifreeze substance called propylene glycol. This mixture may be applied to wood to prevent infestation of destructive termites. Glycol helps the solution seep into wood so the effect of the solution runs deep.
For Cockroaches
You can use the powder form of the acid which is effective in eliminating roaches and other insects.
For Fleas
You sprinkle the acid dust on carpets and let the dust stay there for a week with no vacuuming. The acidic dust kills fleas and mites and their eggs. You can vacuum the carpet after a week.
For general insecticidal use, you can create a 10% solution of boracic acid in water and apply it on furniture. But do a test on hidden surfaces of furniture to check if discoloration occurs. Don't apply the acid solution right away without doing a discoloration test beforehand. Just don't anticipate effects right away because it takes some time. You may need to reapply for better results. Usually, the insecticide solution can last on surfaces when until your next cleaning.
Check with your local chemical supplier for the powder form of the acid which is effective in controlling ants and crawling insects. You can directly pour the powder in cracks and holes where you suspect insects are hiding. The powder may also be sprayed on walls and floors of attics or basements which are typical favorable sites for so many insects.
How the acid of boron kills insects is not well understood but only widely observed. It is relatively safe to humans but toxic to insects. Typically, insects should come in contact with the acidic compound for it to work. It is quite effective when added to food items of household pests. Borate pesticides are generally safer than commercially produced synthetic pesticides or insecticides. While it may be safe to some degree, you should prevent inhalation of the powder. Also, don't discard the acid of borate anywhere because it could contaminate the soil and harm plants when present at high levels. Boric acid hazards are quite limited and the only danger involves ingestion and inhalation in considerable amounts. With enough precaution, you can avoid such mishaps.
