Cala D Or is a well established resort town on the eastern coast of Mallorca, or Majorca to use the local spelling. Mallorca is the largest Spanish island, and is part of the Balearic archipelago. Mallorca is popular with European tourists, particularly from Germany and Britain.

Cala D Or is about 40 miles east of the main airport on Mallorca, the Son Sant Joan International airport, which is just outside the capital of the island, Palma de Mallorca. The roads from the airport to the east coast are in general fairly basic, so the relatively short transfer can take up to two hours by coach.

Cala D Or has avoided some of the overdevelopment seen on the south coast of mainland Spain. Originally a small fishing village, the centre of modern Cala D Or is quite small and home to some of the best bars and cafes in the resort.

As is the case in much of the island, it is possible to take a day trip out on a glass bottomed boat for a spot of aquatic sight seeing. In fact, the marina at Cala D Or is one of the most prominent features of the town, and has moorings for some 565 boats.

The annual Fiesta of ...
... la Mare de Deu del Mar is an extra bonus if you visit during the middle of August. In rough translation, the festival is called ''Our Lady of the Sea'', and features a large procession through the harbour, and some sporting events.

The east coast of Mallorca provides ample opportunities for some cycling. Both bicycle rental and guided bike tours are available to book in Cala D Or, with the east coast providing some a more gentle landscape to explore than you''ll find to the mountainous west of the island.

The beach nearest the centre of Cala D Or is called Cala Gran, and is well maintained. To the north of the town centre is Cala Esmeralda, in the main resort area of Cala D Or. Cala Esmeralda is smaller than Cala Gran, and features nice golden sands. Continuing further north, Cala Ferrara is another golden sand beach which is next to some interesting rock formations.

For those prepared to venture out from the resort, a short drive south you''ll find the Mondrago national park. The beach here, the Cala Mondrago, is worth the drive in itself, with the surrounding park area providing an unspoilt backdrop in contrast to the bustle of Cala D Or.
