Back in Medieval times, Norwich was pretty important. Today it is less so, but it still has a significant number of interesting historical buildings. It also has two cathedrals no less, and is the gateway to the Norfolk Broads.

Because of this history, aside from making it an attractive city, it means there is much to see. Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery is particularly interesting and shows you just why Norwich was so important 500 years ago.

Dragon Hall, is a hall like no other in the UK. It is a restored trading hall that was, surprise surprise, used in Medieval times to trade goods brought to the city from the surrounding farm land and the coast.

As mentioned above, there are two cathedrals in Norwich, but unless you are Christian, only one provides interest. The 900-year old Norman Cathedral is beautiful and extraordinarily still in tact.

If indeed art is something that interests you greatly, the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, part of the University of East Anglia, has a well-rounded collection of modern pieces, particularly pottery and ceramics. Furthermore, the building is a great ...
... example of Norman Foster''s early work and style.

But there is another, altogether more modern side to Norwich. The Forum is a new city landmark. The stylish, dynamic building houses the library, arts and information centre and is a true work of architectural art.

If you like art, the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, part of the University of East Anglia, has a well-rounded collection of modern pieces, particularly pottery and ceramics. It was designed by Norman Foster and is a fine early example of his work.

Despite having access to London in no time at all, Norwich offers some serious shopping opportunities. So much so, that it is regarded as one of the UK''s major shopping destinations. There are several large malls, including the newest addition, Chapelfield Mall. But the city also lays claim to the country''s first pedestrianised street on London Street.

From Norwich, the Norfolk Broads are on the doorstep. This large, interconnecting landscape of rivers, lakes and marshes has been inspiring artists for hundreds of years. Although artificial, they have been around since Roman times and provide the perfect setting for a relaxing day in the British countryside. Bonny Kominek is a travel expert and freelance writer. They recommend Octopus Travel for Norwich hotels.
