What is 3D TV?
3D TV, such as Sky 3D TV is a technology that gives the viewer the illusion that they are viewing a real, three dimensional image rather than a standard 2D image on a screen, leading to a more immersive experience.
Do I need a bigger TV?
When viewing a home 3D service such as Sky 3D, it is advised that you use the largest TV display possible in order to get the best 3D effect; however a huge TV is not essential to achieve an enjoyable 3D effect. You will however need to be sure that your TV is capable of displaying a 3D image, and therefore it is likely that you will need a new 3D capable TV to be sure of this.
Do I need to wear special glasses to watch 3D TV?
Conventional 3D displays have removed the need for the old fashioned red and green glasses that resulted in a strangely coloured 3D image. However, you will still need to wear glasses for a 3D effect. These new 3D glasses work on a left and right eye sequential shutter system, which blocks the eyes from seeing images meant for the other eye. This produces two separate images for each eye, and therefore a 3D effect.
Which ...
... TV is best for 3D: LCD or Plasma?
LCD TV's displaying 3D images can suffer from 3D image display issues, due to their slower response times. Additionally, they require the user to view the image in an upright position at all times in order to properly achieve a 3D affect. With a plasma TV, none of these issues are apparent and so plasma TV's are advised for 3D viewing.
Do 3D TVs use more power than conventional Tvs?
Due to the complex system that a 3D TV uses when in 3D mode, power consumption is almost double that of a conventional TV. But as you are unlikely to conduct most of your TV viewing in 3D mode (using it instead for one off treats such as films or sporting events), this increased power consumption should not have a big effect on you power bills, or on the environment as a whole.
Will I need a new TV?
As previously mentioned, you will need a TV that is capable of displaying 3D content, with HDMI 1.4 inputs that allow the increased levels of data to be sent to your TV set.
Can I still watch 2D TV on a 3D TV set?
A 3D TV set is essentially a 2D TV set, with the ability to additionally display 3D images when in 3D mode. They simply have different features that allow them to process 3D images as well as conventional 2D images.
