Meditation Power - Understanding How It Works
Meditation power is often not understood by people even though it has been a part of our spirituality and religion for centuries. Today, it is not longer just for a monastery or a sanctuary but is a part of day to day life, even in businesses and sports. Meditation can be defined broadly as a mental exercise which would incorporate focus as well as relaxation. This is a practice which has slowly made its way to visualization, which is now a part of sports. Visualization is a meditation type which uses focus and relaxation on such concepts like the perfect swing in golf, winning or the perfect stroke in swimming. Quite a lot of athletes from Olympics spend a few minutes every day to focus and relax to get the gold medal.
Visualization
Meditation power can be fully understood by understanding visualization. In the year 1980, Soviets had conducted an experiment involving visualization. They had divided the athletes in four different groups. One group had practiced the way they usually did. The second group had devoted almost 25% of their time to practice visualization. The third group had devoted around 50% to ...
... it while the fourth group practiced it for 75% time. At Olympics in the year 1980, the group that spent 25% of their time to visualization had won the most number of medals. What this tells us is that visualization does work but it cannot be used as a replacement for hard work. It can help you achieve and enhance your hard work.
Meditation in Business
Meditation power in business is also quite an interesting concept. Larry Ellison who is the Oracle CEO asks his executives to meditate thrice a day. One of the best known inventors of the last century, Thomas Edison had developed a very advanced technique for meditation. Whenever he faced a complex and difficult problem, he would induce trance and would stay in trance till he found the solution to that problem. He had been allowing the subconscious to work while keeping the conscious mind separate.
Conscious and the Subconscious
Meditation power can be understood well with a clear understanding of our conscious and subconscious mind. Our brain contains blood vessels that can cover 100,000 miles and billions of neurons that can conduct around 10 quadrillion computations every second. The brain consumes about 20% oxygen that we breath but it weighs only 2% of our body weight, it uses 30% of our water intake and 25% of the blood flow. With such a powerful mechanism inside us, we should be capable of doing anything at all. However, we all use only a very small part of the brain. Our conscious mind controls only around 4% of the behaviour and perception while the rest is controlled by the subconscious. The subconscious comprises around 83% of the brain mass. In the conscious mind, the electrical impulses travel at 140 mph while in the subconscious mind they travel at 100,000 mph. the conscious mind can process around 2,000 bits/second of information while the subconscious mind can process information at 400 billion bits/second. The conscious mind would divide time as the past, the present and the future while the subconscious would view all the events only as the present. For this reason, we would have different reactions when we try to remember past events that are either great events or embarrassing moments.
The Power of the Subconscious
Meditation power is all about the power of the subconscious mind. Our subconscious mind is very powerful and through meditation, we can enter a state which will allow us to communicate with it. Imagine that there are 3 circles adjacent to each other and each one is larger than the one which is next to it. Out of these circles, the conscious mind would be the smallest one but still too large to enter the subconscious. The mid sized one is the subconscious. You would need a door in order to enter the subconscious. You will need to relax and then focus on the hara, as known by the Zen Buddhists. Hara is the often known to be located below the navel but in fact, is just the state of nothingness. It is the state where the conscious mind is completely emptied so that you can communicate with the subconscious. Communication can happen both ways and you can either discover the answers to everything that you ever wanted like Edison or you can create something new for you by providing an input to your subconscious. This is what is achieved through visualization and this is exactly what had been done by the Soviets before the Olympics.
When you would connect with the subconscious, you would release a lot of mental power but this is not the last step. If you continue to probe deeper and meditate more, you would discover that there are further places to explore. This is known as collective unconscious. Noosphere is a concept quite similar to this that had been talked about by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. With meditation, you would be able to explore various planes of existence and not just the one that we currently exist in. You can either live a conscious life or you can explore the universe and yourself and begin an incredible journey. You can choose to explore meditation power.
