What Sort Of Training Does Plumbers Get?
Many people wonder about the training that a plumber receives, and how qualified they truly are to work on the plumbing components in their home. A plumber is a professional who has gone to school and learned the trade. Plumbers provide services like emergency plumbing issues such as a pipe that is clogged or water that is leaking. Plumbers are also integral in the building of a home where they can provide the layouts for the pipes during construction. A plumber is a serious profession that requires a lot of knowledge and skill.
One of the major parts of a plumbers training is on the job. Although, like doctors, plumbers are trained in school, it doesn't take the place of real world training because some things simply can't be taught in a classroom. Therefore, many plumbers start off in an apprentice position with an established plumbing company and learn from those that have been working in the field for many years. Plumbers are also licensed in some areas, requiring that they demonstrate knowledge and proficiency before they can do plumbing jobs.
Modern plumbing knowledge includes not only the installation ...
... and maintenance of pipes, cisterns and valves, and the equipment that is used to do the plumbing job such as a pipe snake, but plumbers must also be aware of regulations that govern how these systems may be installed or what standards they need to meet. In particular is the plumber that is working on main lines such as water and sewer lines or on gas lines. Working with gas lines for plumbing problems is inherently dangerous and should never be attempted by anyone but a licensed plumber.
Many plumbers will have around 700 hours of classroom training learning codes and formulas and will often do an apprenticeship with 10,000 hours. Also, the plumber may be required to work for a Master Plumber for an additional five years before they can take the four part Master examination. Plumbing is a career that is very rewarding and lucrative, but it also take a lot of work to get to that point, with not only classroom hours being required but a great deal of on the job training from someone qualified to give instruction.
Plumbers will also learn about various domestic installations such as fixtures in bathrooms and kitchens, and all the knowledge that is required for that. Modern installations may include electric shower assembly, Jacuzzi tubs, and pressured plumbing in the bathrooms. Plumbers may also learn sink fittings in the kitchen and dishwasher specific installations. Plumbers are trained in modern appliances and fixtures and the learning doesn't stop at any point, but a company with years of experience can provide professional and qualified plumbers.
