But behind the scenes of any business there is a great deal of hard work involved. New stock needs to be ordered, staff rotas must be organised and accounts have to be kept up to date. Local stores may play an important role in our lives, but this would not be the case without the efforts of their owners. And that is without taking anything else into account... Running a small business will have plenty of challenges when everything is going smoothly, but if disaster strikes, then it can really put a spanner in the works!

You may not think there are many things which could go wrong. After all, we are only talking about a small local store. But you would be surprised at the number of situations which can arise without the slightest warning. Take a moment to think about this; we all know about the risks of fire, theft or flooding, but there are many other far more unusual disasters just waiting to befall the unsuspecting storekeeper! We have a big problem with drunk drivers in our society and what is to stop one of them taking a ‘wrong turn' into the front of small store? Or what about opening your shop one ...
... morning to find that your chimney stack has collapsed and fallen through your roof during the night?

You may scoff at these scenarios and point out that the chances of them actually taking place are incredibly slim. And you would, of course, be right; but life has a habit of springing the most unpleasant surprises upon us when we least expect it. Besides, those are just two possible situations... Who knows what will happen tomorrow or even this afternoon?

Many people go through life with an ‘It will never happen to me' attitude, but this is not a good philosophy to have. Anything can happen to any of us and it may prove to be either good or bad! It is always best to have as many safeguards in place as possible. We may not have the power to prevent a disaster, but we can certainly have insurance in place to help us pick up the pieces!

Everyone will have their own individual needs when they are purchasing insurance so it is good to know there is a wide selection of policies to choose from. But the best news of all is that shopkeepers can purchase a policy that is purposely designed for their type of work; it is called Traders Insurance and it will meet all the requirements of someone running their own store. This can be a very worthwhile investment and it will offer shopkeepers great peace of mind.

But it may still be worth getting someone to check on that chimney stack sometime...
