The same thing happens every year. The summer comes to an end ? and indeed, some of us might ask if it ever arrived in parts of the UK ? but in other parts of Europe there is still plenty of sun to be enjoyed, with temperatures in the high 20s. But this isn''t the time to be disheartened. With prices dropping as we hit September, and many resorts getting quieter as school summer holidays come to an end, this is a prime time to find a bargain in the sun.

But where to go that is accessible, friendly and no-hassle? For many, the resort-haven of the Canary Isles, off the south-eastern coast of Spain, is just the place to be. There is an overwhelming choice of places to go to, and you might be tempted into thinking that they all look the same, but with a bit of research and some key advice you could find just what you''re looking for.

Corralejo is located on the Fuerteventura north side, and is a great place to have your whole trip, or to use as a starting point for further exploration of other Canary destinations such as Lanzarote and Lobos. If you''re feeling very fit you could even take part in the competitive swim ...
... from Lobos to Corralejo which is held every summer ? or you could just watch from the harbour wall.

At its heart, Corralejo is an old fishing village, and if you go deep into the town, there are plenty of delightful little white-washed houses and restaurants to be found. However, it has expanded and modernized somewhat so that the area stretching down to the marina, less a fishing port and more a mooring-post for smart new boats and yachts, is a more international resort-style enclave.

Still, restaurants aside, the main reason for visiting the Canaries in September is the sea ? having been baked all summer long it remains warm and clean. There are plenty of lovely coastal locations to explore. As well as potential trips to neighbouring islands, simply stepping out of your hotel plants you in the soft sand dunes which cover several miles.

Pace up towards Playa del Pozo if you fancy a quieter beach ? though it is a naturist hotspot, so warn the kids ? or continue along Playa del Medano and Playa de Viejo for windsurfing and slightly less leisurely activities. Either way you can soak up the sun and keep yourself active before returning to the grey UK. Bonny Kominek, a freelance writer, wrote this article after travelling to Corralejo, and would recommend octopus travel when searching for Corralejo hotels.
