Skills Shortage Looms Over Australia
For those wanting to move into Australia, skilled visa applications is one of the most popular routes to take. With the country having a perennial huge demand for workers, one can quickly find a position he can apply in. However, with the changes being done on the country's immigration program, this easy route might soon be a thing of the past.
It can be recalled that the Department of Immigration and Citizenship began implementing these changes since last year. One of the biggest of these changes was the revision of the skilled occupation list, which took effect last July 1. Under the new list, more that a hundred positions that were considered by the DIAC to be low level were removed to make way for higher positions.
The changes were almost immediately felt by those who were affected. Skilled visa applicants, who were getting these vocational courses, were forced to withdrew their application, as these were promptly canceled after the introduction of the new list. Others who chose to continue were given only a short period to find a job that will qualify them for a visa.
And it seems that foreign workers ...
... still have a lot to contend with. Here, one of the biggest concerns that came up recently is the proposed cuts in the number of immigrants to be let in yearly. In fact, the matter has become a central issue for the two parties vying for the coming elections this August. Both the Labor Party and the Liberal party are proposing several plans to cut down on immigration intake.
Luckily, however, foreign workers seemed to have found an ally in the business sector/ according to business people, a cut on the immigration intake will not be good for the country's economy. They explained that, because of its relatively small population, Australia relies heavily on the immigrant labor force for labor. Thus, any cut here will certainly lead to a worker shortage that will greatly affect the economy.
They argued that, instead of cutting down the number of people coming in, the government should instead redirect it to where it is needed. They also added that by carefully managing the flow people into the places that need them the most, they will be able to solve the problems of large migration numbers and worker shortages.
The government has taken a closer look into these arguments. They also said that they would develop more effective policies based on these recommendations. But for now, foreign workers will have to wait for the possible outcome.
