Fuengirola is a town in the Andalucia region of Spain on the Costa del Sol. In the 1960s, this town saw a transformation from a small fishing village into a modern high rise holiday resort that is popular with local and foreign tourists alike.

As well as having over five miles of beautiful sandy beaches, Fuengirola can also boast several bars, restaurants, shops, supermarkets, entertainment venues, self catering apartments, and plush high rise hotels.

The town is situated very close to the vibrant and beautiful city of Malaga and its international airport, as well as a number of other Costa del Sol resorts such as Benalmadena and Torremolinos. The train and bus network is excellent, so you can reach all of these destinations quickly and with the minimum of fuss.

The Fuengirola beachfront has one of the longest promenades in the Costa del Sol area, and this was recently widened and landscaped to improve it further. The nightlife in Fuengirola is positively buzzing, with live entertainment, late bars, and discotheques galore.

The Los Boliches area, which is next to the main resort area, offers tourists ...
... a taste of traditional Spanish life, with whitewashed houses and winding narrow streets. The locals of Los Boliches organise the feast of the Virgen del Carmen, one of the biggest fiestas of the year, in which an effigy of the Virgin is followed out to sea by a flotilla of boats.

Because of Fuengirolas long history as a fishing and sea trading town, there are lots of excellent seafood restaurants in the town that offer fresh fish dishes every day, such as sardine kebabs, rice with shellfish, and seabass baked in salt.

For those who fancy a little fast food, you could visit any one of a number of traditional Spanish tapas bars where you can chow down on small dishes such as local cheese, mussels, prawns in garlic, and chorizo sausage. However, if you do not fancy tapas, there are lots of pizza joints, fish and chip shops, and burger bars in the town.

Fuengirola can boast the only zoo in the Costa del Sol, as well as a big water park on the Fuengirola by pass, and the Tivoli amusement park at Arroyo de la Miel. Also there are plenty of beach and water sports on offer at the seafront, such as sailing, scuba diving, and windsurfing. This Fuengirola tourist guide was written by Bonny Kominek.
