Dubrovnik is a compact city in which much of the centre is pedestrianised. In fact, the old town itself is perhaps the main attraction for tourists, as it is almost like stepping back in time. The best way to see the city in the round is to climb up on the medieval walls and take a look around.

The main street in the old town is the Stradun, also known as the Placa. Here you can find the splendid Sponza Palace, which was one of the few structures to survive the earthquake of 1667, the clock tower, the Church of St Blaise, Ondorios Fountain, Orlandos Column, and the Franciscan monastery.

The Franciscan Monastery, just off the Stradun, contains one of the oldest pharmacies in all of Europe, as well as the monastery museum, an internal courtyard flanked by ornate cloisters, and the single nave Church of Saint Francis.

One of the only structures to survive the catastrophic earthquake of 1667, Sponza Palace dates back to the 1300s, serving as a royal home, a mint, and a customs house. Here you can find a moving memorial to the Dubrovnik Defenders, the soldiers who fought in the siege of 1991 to 1992.

The ...
... Rectors Palace is a stunning example of venetian gothic architecture. It was originally home to the rector of Dubrovnik, who served a limited time in office and was banned from leaving the palace except when he was on official business. These days, it is a venue for traditional music concerts and a museum.

The Church of St Blaise, located at the East end of the Stradun, is an eighteenth century baroque church that features a fifteenth century statue of St Blaise, the patron saint of Dubrovnik, and another in which he cradles a model of pre earthquake Dubrovnik.

Dubrovnik Cathedral was allegedly built at the behest of Richard the Lionheart in gratitude for his life being saved in a storm near Dubrovnik. This large baroque structure features a large cupola that dominates the skyline of the city, and three aisles.

Legend would have it that Dubrovnik Cathedral was built by Richard the Lionheart, or at least commissioned and paid for by him, as a thank you for his life being spared in a storm nearby. It features three aisles and a large dome that is visible from all around the old town.
