A Guide To Holidays In Adeje

10 million visitors flock to Tenerife every year for its year round sunshine, long, picture-postcard beaches and luxury hotels. But, for the adventurous traveller, there is a lot more this Canary Isle than immediately meets the eye in the standard tourist brochures.
Did you know that the Tenerife is a volcanic island? Yes, ok, but did you know that this volcano is the highest peak in Spain reaching a dizzying 3718 metres above sea level? Didn''t think so. Although now inactive, the eruptions from Pico del Teide have left their mark upon the landscape. The national park surrounding the peak is a moonscape of coloured rock formations, deep emerald green pools and hardened shrubs and plant life.
The capital city is where to go for culture and a real sense of Canarian life. It is a bustling port city alive with activity almost 24 hours a day. This isn''t because the residents work hard, more that they play hard. The quirky shops, brightly painted buildings and sumptuous food make a day trip here worthwhile.
However, seeing as most people come to the island for spectacular beaches, most end up somewhere along ...
... the long stretch of san between Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje. Here you''ll find your quintessential packages of fun in the sun.
Costa Adeje is more upmarket and relaxed than its neighbour Playa de las Americas. Hotels tend to be four and five-star quality although families are still well catered for. There is plenty to do on the number one attraction, the beach.
Most people flit between high-voltage activities such as jet skiing and banana boating, to cruising around on pedlos, sailing or doing pretty much nothing at all on a sun lounger.
Life here revolves around water, being on it or in it. It doesn''t have to be the sea though. There is a huge Aqua Park nearby full of flumes, slides and even a wave machine. There is also a dolphin show every afternoon.
Speaking of dolphins, you can see them, and whales, in their natural environment by jumping aboard a cruise. You''ll also get taken to remote beaches too, so if you want to avoid the crowds during peak season for a day, this is a good way to do it.
If you like golf, you won''t be disappointed. Because of its climate, Tenerife attracts golfers all year long. This means heavy investment has gone into the creation of newer and ever improved courses. This guide to visitor attractions in Adeje was written by Bonny Kominek.
