New Delhi is the capital city of India. Construction of New Delhi began very recently in relative terms, in 1911. However, as one of the nine districts of the metropolis of Delhi, New Delhi is part of a larger city that is one of the most ancient in the world. Here are just a few of the attractions you''ll find in and around New Delhi.

The Red Fort is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Delhi. This impressive red sandstone fort was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, and completed in 1648. As well as a walk around the lush greenery of the gardens surrounding the fortifications, there are several different buildings and areas to explore within.

The Chatta Chowk (Covered Bazaar) is just after the entrance gate, and is home to hundreds of souvenir sellers. Haggling over price is standard. You are advised to bring small denomination notes if you think you''ll make a purchase, to avoid being short changed.

For an educational experience, you''ll find the Swatantra Sangrama Sangrahalaya (Museum of the Independence Movement) just after the Chatta Chowk, to the left. This museum charts the ...
... independence movement from the 1857 uprising through to the time of the iconic Ghandi.

There are many other buildings to explore within the Red Fort, including several palaces, and other impressive buildings such as the marble built Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience), where the emperor entertained special guests.

One of the three UNESCO World heritage sites in Delhi, Humayun''s Tomb is in the south of the city. The gardens around the tomb are kept in top condition, and were extensively renovated in 2003. The centrepiece attraction, the tomb of Humayun, was built for the second Moghul emperor, and is thought to be the blueprint for the more famous Taj Mahal.

The Qutub complex is another of the UNESCO World heritage sites in Delhi, and again features immaculate gardens that offer a good venue for a picnic. The imposing 72.5 metre tall Qutub Minar is the most famous structure in the complex, a minaret that was the tallest structure in the world when building was completed in the 14th Century.

Take a break from touring monuments and historical sites with a visit to the National Zoological Park, also known as Delhi Zoo. Here you''ll find some of the most famous animals native to India, including tigers and elephants. Bonny Kominek has recently returned from a year travelling in Egypt. Bonny Kominek recommends looking the services offered by Octopus Travel when you are planning a visit, and booking New Delhi hotels.
