The Dalaman region of Turkey is a place of immense natural beauty, with scented orange groves, beautiful cotton fields, and rocky outcrops as far as the eye can see. The recent introduction of an international airport has seen it become a popular destination for tourists looking to get away from it all.

The town of Dalyan, in the Dalaman region, is home to the rare and endangered loggerhead sea turtle, also known as the Caretta. They live on the protected Iztuzu beach, a golden sandy beach that is a must see for any nature enthusiast.

Looking out over the town of Dalyan are the Kings Tombs, which are nearly two and a half millennia old. Built into the cliff side by the ancient Lycians, these are a must see for anyone with a passing interest in archaeology and ancient civilisations.

A mere half an hour downstream from the Kings Tombs is the ruins of the ancient trading city of Kaunos, which archeologists believe dates back to around 3000BC. Here you can see the remains of a 1500 seater amphitheatre, Roman baths, and a church.

Dalyan is perhaps most famous for its sulphur rich mud baths, which are thought ...
... to be very beneficial in the treatment of a wide range of ailments. It is also believed that the water has a special anti ageing property. These mud baths are very popular with locals and tourists alike, and are an excellent way to spend a few hours of relaxing bliss.

The town of Koycegz, situated upon a lake, is well worth the trip inland just to see the astonishing panoramic views of this area. The Dalaman river can boast some thrilling rapids, and as a result is hugely popular with intermediate and experienced white water rafters.

Keen birdwatchers should make a bee line for the Dalyan Delta, which contains a huge variety of wildlife including several rare species of bird. If you fancy a peaceful, relaxing afternoon in the sun, you might want to take a boat down to the cove at Ekincik.

The nearest beach to Dalaman is Sarigerme Beach, a beautiful sandy beach with clear blue waters where you can indulge in a number of different water sports. Sarigerme Beach is also home to a recently completed 18 hole golf course, the first to be built in the region. This guide to visitor attractions in Dalaman was written by Bonny Kominek.
