Luxor in Southern Egypt has been called the "world''s greatest open air museum". This is thanks mainly to the number of well preserved remains from antiquity existing in Luxor, once the site of the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes. There are many unique attractions in Luxor for the intrepid traveller; here are a few of them.

Luxor Temple is actually a complex of temples on the east bank of the Nile which demands exploration. While not as large and imposing as the complex at Karnak, Luxor temple should perhaps be the first stop in your tour of the many ancient temples in and around Luxor.

Karnak - or to give it its full name, the Karnak Temple complex - is an impressively vast collection of ruined temples and other buildings. Of the four distinct precincts or zones, the Precinct of Amun Re is open to the public. Leave a full day for a proper exploration of Karnak.

The Valley of the Kings is on the West Bank of the Nile ? opposite Luxor - and was the site of Pyramid construction for over 500 years. There are many guided tours which can be booked in Luxor that perhaps present the best way to explore the ...

Take a break from the wealth of ancient monuments and tombs that will take up much of your sight-seeing time with a visit to one of the many bustling souks ? open air markets ? in Luxor. Haggling over the price of souvenirs is pretty much mandatory, so don''t be shy and enjoy the experience.

No visit to Egypt is really complete without taking at least a short cruise down the Nile. There are literally hundreds of options, from large luxury cruisers that travel for weeks, to the opportunity to take a day out in a small traditional Dhow.

If you are prepared to take a trip out of Luxor to the Cairo museum you''ll find it is well worth the effort. The famous attraction is the Royal Mummy Room, which is home to nine royal mummies from the era of the Pharaohs, including the recently discovered Queen Hatshepsut.

Take a look online to get an idea of the touring and travel options available. The visit to Cairo, for example, is possible via a short plane flight, or alternatively an overnight train. Since there is so much of the ancient world to explore in and around Luxor, a little research prior to your visit is probably necessary to make the most of your time in Egypt. #Pen Name is a retired travel agent and keen amateur Egyptologist.
