All international tourists must be on an organised trip to visit the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR). There are no exceptions to this Tibetan travel prohibition. Travellers must have Tibet Travel permissions, a private car, a driver, an official trip schedule, and a tour leader. Permits for Tibet cannot be obtained through a Chinese Embassy or Consulate.

If you want to go to Tibet by rail, you will get an email with a copy of your permission to print. A photocopy of the Tibet Travel Permit is all that is required to board the train to Tibet except in Chongqing, where an original permit is required.


For your Tibet Travel from Nepal, the procedures alter, and you do not need to have your permission since you will be awarded a Group China Visa instead.
