A Quick Guide To Sheffield

Sheffield in South Yorkshire gained worldwide fame during the Industrial Revolution as a producer of steel. Modern Sheffield is known for the friendly attitude of the locals, the multitude of green open spaces, and a good selection of museums and galleries ? as well as still producing some fine cutlery! Here are a few of the things to see and do in Sheffield.
The largest art gallery in Sheffield is called the Millennium Galleries. Here the industry of Sheffield past and present is displayed and celebrated in the Craft and Design Gallery and the Metalwork Gallery. A Special Exhibition Gallery hosts touring exhibitions from other major galleries such as the Tate Gallery, while the Rushkin Gallery displays a local collection built up in the 19th Century.
The Winter Garden is next to the Millennium Galleries, and is a large glass and wood conservatory housing exotic plant and tree species ? indeed the conservatory is the largest of its kind in Europe. A coffee shop provides refreshments, and a chance to warm up if you''ve been caught in the weather outside.
Near the Winter Garden, the Peace Gardens are ...
... a great place for a summer picnic. There are some nice water fountains to enjoy as you take some time out from the bustle of the city. The Peace Gardens are next to the Town Hall.
Tudor Square in the in centre of Sheffield, and is tourist friendly thanks to being fully pedestrianised. The famous Crucible Theatre, home of the World snooker championships, is here, as well as Lyceum Theatre ? in fact, Tudor Square is home to the second largest theatre complex in the U.K.
If you fancy getting a bit more active, the largest outdoor artificial ski slope in Europe is found at Sheffield Ski Village. A well as the ski slope, there is a new bowling alley for the less adventurous, and also a children''s adventure park.
There is an Olympic sized swimming pool at Ponds Forge, which has excellent facilities complete with a well equipped diving pool. There are also flumes for children, and a wave pool. You''ll find Ponds Forge easily, as it is next to the train station.
The Canal Basin offers the chance for a boat ride during the summer, or alternatively just a nice walk and a look at the many colourfully decorated narrow boats. The hotel on the Canal Basin can provide refreshments as needed. Bonny Kominek is a snooker fanatic who visits Sheffield for the World Snooker Championships every year. Bonny Kominek recommends checking out Octopus Travel when looking for Sheffield hotels.
