There are several arguments for using an organic anti-aging face moisturizer, but probably the most compelling are the various hazards posed by the chemicals contained in mainstream moisturizers. For example, mainstream moisturizers contain parabens. Because of their ability to imitate the action of estrogen within the body, parabens can interfere with the bodys normal hormonal processes. A research study performed in the UK discovered a high level of parabens present in the breast tissues of women who had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

And most people assume that when one applies a cosmetic to the face in the morning, the same cosmetic can be washed off prior to bedtime. However, this is not true of cosmetics containing parabens. While it is true that parabens contained in food are excreted from the body via the process of digestion, the parabens in cosmetics, as demonstrated by scientific research, are absorbed into the tissues of the body.

These research studies did result in a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) review of the use of parabens in cosmetics. But the FDA concluded that the UK study did not present sufficient evidence to establish that parabens in cosmetics could cause breast cancer. However, it is interesting to note that they could not prove that parabens did not contribute to the development of breast cancer. Nevertheless, they took no further action against parabens.

Cosmetic manufacturers include parabens in their products for two reasons. One, they are a low cost ingredient that improves the shelf life of the cosmetic. While this is certainly advantageous to the manufacturer, it is not necessarily a benefit to the consumer. The manufacturers claim that the use of parabens protects the customer from bacterial growth and the resulting infections. Nevertheless, there are natural products which offer the same protection but do not disturb the bodys hormonal processes. Organic anti-aging face moisturizers do not include parabens but have not caused dangerous bacterial infections in their users.

Certain parabens such as methylparaben react with UVB exposure resulting in accelerated aging of the skin and DNA damage. Yet obviously the purpose for selecting any anti-aging product is to delay the aging process and not intensify it.

Parabens have also been known to cause irritant contact dermatitis in some users. This form of dermatitis is a red, burning, scaly rash that may take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks to heal.

Because of their low cost, parabens have been used in moisturizers since the early 1900s. They are several different kinds and are most recognizable on a list of ingredients by their prefixesâ€propyl, butyl, ethyl, methyl and isobutyl. They are so common that there are few mainstream moisturizers that do not include them. So by choosing organic anti-aging face moisturizers the savvy consumer is assured that this cosmetic is paraben free.
