Chinese Valentine's Day Comes From The Most Romantic Love Story
Feb. 14 of each year is Valentine's Day in most Western countries, a big day for men and women. For Chinese at the same time, there is also an important day for them to celebrate their love and that is usually called Chinese Valentine's Day, which falls on the 7th day of July in lunar month, Double Seventh Festival, therefore, is also known among people. As the romantic story like to happen at night, and people still calls this day as Happy Night of Sevens (or qi xi) for Chinese.
About this day's original, there is a romantic and memory story. It is said that there was a kind-hearted, honest and diligence man. As his parents died very early and he was only company with a cow and lived by farming, people named him NiuLang (Cowboy). One day, the Seven Fairies Maiden come down to the human world to bath and play, and the seventh fairy (Weaver Maid) who is the youngest sister among them saw NiuLang occasionally and fell in love with him.
Then she, in order to pursuit her happiness, came down secretly to earth and married NiuLang. They lived a happy life from that time. The Cowherd farmed in the field and the Weaver ...
... Maid wove at home. Later, they gave birth to a boy and a girl, and this family was full of happiness.
However, the God of Heaven, the Weaver Maid's father, soon found out the fact. In his eyes, marriage between a mortal and fairy was strictly forbidden, and ordered the Queen Mother of the Western Heavens to bring the Weaver Maid back. But the lover didn't want to depart from each other so they caught up tightly and begged to her. At last, the Queen Mother took off one of her gold hairpins and made a stroke that called Milk Way by people. Hence, the cowboy and Weaver Maid were separated on the two sides forever. Their loyalty love moved the magpies deeply, so all of them decided to help this couple and came to the Milk Way to build a bridge with their bodies for the Cowherd and Waver Maid to meet each other through this only way. Eventually, the Queen Mother was totally moved by their love and these magpies, and allowed them to meet each other on the 7th of July in lunar month every year。
This great love is still respected until now by the modern people, maybe some traditional customs have been already weakened or diluted, but this special day is celebrated by men and women all the time as Valentine's Day. Besides, at the night of that day, people will come out to find that Milk Way and wish the Cowherd and Weaver Maid could meet again and also hope the forever love between the people themselves.
