Top Five Perfume Stories In July 2010
5. Marc Jacobs Causes Controversy with Perfume Ad
World renowned fashion designer Marc Jacobs has decided that the best way to promote his new fragrance is to strip naked. The new scent, called Bang, is to be advertised with an image of the American designer lying naked on a bed of silver foil.
He states that "Once I agreed to be the model, I couldn't see what I would wear to express the spirit of the fragrance. We tried it with clothes, but it didn't work. My immediate reaction was, I don't know. But then I came to see that it made sense. Men's fragrance, unlike women's in a certain way, is very personal. It's a layer on top of skin, for women, it can be like changing a makeup colour, but not for men."
The designer is a favourite of a number of Hollywood luminaries, including Madonna and Scarlett Johannson.
4. Avon Posts Rise in Profits
Avon have posted high quartely profits, indicating a rise in the use of beauty products and perfumes over the last financial quarter. The company, whose products include makeup, fragrances and jewellery, have posted earnings of $169.2million. This is more thasn ...
... double the $84.6million earnings that they gained at the same point last year.
Total revenue has also risen 8% from $2.48billion to $2.68billion.
3. Katy Perry Lines Up New Perfume Release for November
Katy Perry is the latest celebrity to bring her own fragrance to the table, as she has teamed up with Firmenich to create Purr, a scent which is believed to contain hints of peach, nectar, apple, green bamboo, jasmine blossom and vanilla orchid. The "I Kissed a Girl" singer is certain that her fans will love it, and couldn't help gushing about the perfume.
In an interview with WWD she said There are amazing fragrances backed by other celebrities, but what I'm bringing is not like any other. It wasn't just like, ‘I love gardenias.' That would have been the easy route. I really wanted to develop a scent that was completely unlike anything I'd smelled before and not one that smelled like a knockoff of another scent. I'd never want to do anything ‘just because.'
The fact that so many of her peers have gotten into the perfume market inspired her to do so herself, and couple that with the fact that she is already a huge fan of perfumes and the deal was sealed.
When pressed about the fragrance's name, the starlet revealed I'm a very lyrical-based person, and the whole ‘purr' thing kept coming back - the sound is in perfume, perfect, even Perry if you say it a certain way. It just seemed logical. The hardest part was keeping it under wraps for a year during the development process. I kept wanting to tell someone!
The perfume is due to be launched in November of this year, just in time for Christmas.
