I love spending time in the garden, so helping my sister-in-law create her first vegetable garden was an absolute joy!

She had a small, neglected space by the side of her house that was overgrown with weeds and covered in river stones. It was a great spot for a garden—close to the kitchen and with plenty of sunlight in the afternoon. With her birthday coming up, it was the perfect time to transform it into something useful and beautiful.

The first step was clearing the space. We removed a large shrub that was taking up most of the area, then tackled the countless river stones one by one. Once the ground was clear, we turned the soil to loosen it up and mixed in fresh compost to enrich it.

With the soil ready, we soaked the seedlings in an organic seaweed solution to give them a strong start before planting them. We carefully placed each plant, keeping in mind which ones needed more sun and which would do better in shadier spots. To help keep weeds under control, we added a layer of leaves on top of the soil. Finally, we gave the garden a good watering with a diluted seaweed solution to help the plants ...
... settle in.

We chose vegetables that the family would enjoy and that were easy to grow. The garden now has cucumbers, capsicums, zucchinis, lettuce, and spinach, along with carrots grown from seeds. We also saved some struggling silverbeet and spring onions from pots and replanted them in their new home.

Just two weeks later, the garden is thriving. The spinach and silverbeet are almost ready to harvest, and everything is growing beautifully. My sister-in-law, who had been dreaming of a vegetable garden for six years, was beyond happy. She said, "I’ve always wanted a veggie garden—can’t thank you enough for making it happen!"

It’s proof that with a little effort, any space can be turned into a productive and beautiful garden!
