But it is very important to protect your mobile holiday home from crime. Caravans are often very easy to break into, even top of the range models.

In many ways they are a far easier target than a family home and most thieves will be fully aware of this. However, the good news is that there are a number of ways to reduce the risk of a break-in.

Don't Let Your Guard down
The whole point of going on holiday is having some time to unwind. Unfortunately many of us will be so caught up with our relaxation, that we will become a little complacent. It is common for people to forget about locking their caravan door when they are going off for a walk and open windows can easily be overlooked.
Make a point of checking your caravan is properly locked every time that you go out, even if you are not planning to be gone for very long. You would be amazed at just how quickly someone can break in!

Look After Your Valuables
These days, a lot of our most valuable possessions are ‘pocket-sized'; and this makes life even easier for thieves! Mobile phones, digital cameras, iPods and palmtops will ...
... all have would-be thieves drooling at the mouth. And most people will take all of these on holiday with them.
If you are going out for the day, then take your expensive items with you; do not leave them in your caravan! It may be a nuisance carting them around, but it is better than having them stolen. If you have to, then lock them in the boot of your car where they cannot be seen.

Make Sure Your Caravan is Properly Insured
Most car insurance will offer a certain amount of protection to your caravan, but it is much better to have a specific policy in place. If you want it covered properly, then there are plenty of companies who specialise in static and tourer caravan insurance. It will cost far less than you think and it will give you great peace of mind whilst you are away from home.

‘Absence Makes the Thieves Grow Bolder'
Something else which makes caravans such an easy target for thieves is the fact that they are normally left empty for long periods of time. Unless you hire your own security guard, then there is precious little you can do about leaving your caravan unoccupied. However, you can ask the people camping next to you to keep an eye on things whilst you are out. This may not be a foolproof answer, but it may just be enough to put off any potential thieves.
