FEMA has documented that in less than 30 seconds a small fire can become a major fire, and a house can become fully engulfed in a matter of minutes. You need to do everything you can to prevent you or your family from being one of the 4000 deaths or 25,000 injuries caused by house fires in the U.S. every year. To ensure the safety of your family in the event of a fire, a fire safety plan is a must. This plan should, at a minimum, consist of two major elements; a warning system of correctly located smoke detectors and an escape plan identifying at least 2 escape routes from every bedroom.
Your home should be equipped with a smoke detector on each level of the home and additional one in every bedroom. To maintain this warning system, batteries in smoke alarms should be changed every six months. Additionally, most manufacturers recommend the replacement of the smoke detector every seven years. In the event of a fire, these smoke detectors will alert your family to the danger. The minimal cost of maintaining this warning system will pay for itself in peace of mind alone.
The potential rapid spread of the fire ...
... throughout your home makes a quick exit essential. If exit through the doorway is blocked by smoke or fire, a window can typically provide a second escape route with the use of a fire escape ladder. Many brands and models of fire escape ladders are available. The Saf-Escape brand of escape ladders offers a large selection of models in lengths accommodating 2, 3, 4 or 5 story windows and various wall thicknesses. SafeEscape.com website can provide assistance in selecting the correct escape ladder for each bedroom in your house or apartment.
With a warning system and escape routes in place, the most important remaining element is practice. The repetition of regular fire drills will remove the need for thought in an emergency situation. All members of the home should practice escaping the house, using each available escape route. These practice sessions should include practicing the correct deployment and use of fire ladders. Selection of a non-tangling, reusable fire ladder will allow for its use in drills. This extra effort can save precious seconds in the escape of children and adults from a fire. An additional benefit of the fire drills is to provide children a familiarity with the fire ladder, minimizing any hesitation about the ladder in the case of a fire.
