Understanding The Grades Of Plastic Mould Steel: Which One Is Right For You?

You might need to have a closer look at plastic mould steel to set the production lines in operation. This category refers to specialized steel that can be used to create identical plastic parts at high pressure. It is considered inevitable for a factory line where plastic products or components are mass-produced. Generally speaking, this type of steel has certain key characteristics, including good wear resistance, ample hardness, and optimum dimensional stability. Incorporating the right grade can have a significant effect on your production capabilities.
A Basic Idea about Injection Moulding: Processes and Materials
Injection mould steel is manufactured via a combination of alloying, and heat treatment, followed by surface finishing to create complex moulds. Alloy formulations in this variety include different options such as chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and carbon. The American Society of Plastics Industry identified injection mould steel into different grades based on key aspects.
A primary aspect is to determine the cycle time of the steel so that you can have a better idea about the applicability ...
... of the product. However, higher cycle times also mean that the steel produced is relatively expensive, and this could be an impediment! You need to connect with a reputed plastic mould steel supplier to weigh in your options before you decide on the right grade for you. The American grading system is recognized worldwide and can help you identify the best option for you. The classification is based on identifying the best steel type for injection moulding machines of 400 tons or less.
• Injection Mould 101
This is the most expensive grade, with cycle times of up to 1 million. It should be an ideal choice if you have a big factory eliciting the need for heavy mass production of plastic components. The steel type has certain individual requirements, including a mould hardness requirement of HRC 30. Also, you would have to install temperature controllers both on the upper die and the lower die.
• Injection Mould 102
The cycle time is usually 5 lacs to 10 lacs times. While it is not as expensive as the above grade, it is still a viable choice. Like Grade 101, implementing this type also involves special requirements including a minimum hardness of HRC30 for the mould embryo. Also, the manufacturer would need highly detailed mould design information to proceed. Erosion-proof controller pipes may or may not be required.
• Injection Mould 103
This is a moderate grade with a cycle time of up to 500,000 times. The mould hardness requirement is HRC17. The minimum hardness should be HRC30.
• Injection Mould 104
This steel grade is utilized in low-production volume facilities, with a cycle time of 100,000 times. The steel grade has a low wear resistance and should be used judiciously. It is also relatively inexpensive and you can get better information from your preferred plastic mould steel supplier. The mould embryo can be made of aluminum or soft steel. Also, the upper die can be made from aluminum.
• Injection Mould 105
This is a very basic grade with cycle time not exceeding 500 times. It is typically used to produce a limited number of first plates at a significantly lower price.
Final Words
With a better understanding of the steel grades, you can effectively mechanize your factory setting, supercharging the unit to meet up with the tasks. Working with a leading steel supplier should give you a headway on what you should expect from a specific grade of injection mould steel.
