A faulty update from U.S. cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike caused a global tech outage on Friday, crashing Microsoft Windows systems worldwide. This outage disrupted various industries, including banks, hospitals, and 911 call centers, and led to flight cancellations and public transit delays. Though a fix was implemented by the afternoon, experts warn of potential ripple effects throughout the weekend.

CrowdStrike, used by over half of Fortune 500 companies, acknowledged that a recent content update defectively impacted Microsoft’s Windows OS. The incident was clarified as neither a security breach nor a cyberattack.

"Earlier today, a CrowdStrike update brought down several IT systems globally," stated a Microsoft spokesperson. "We are actively supporting customers to assist in their recovery."

CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz apologized on social media, confirming the issue had been identified, isolated, and fixed. He assured that the company is working with affected customers to restore their services. Microsoft also stated that the underlying cause had been fixed, and impacted Microsoft 365 apps and services ...

Kurtz cautioned that adversaries might try to exploit such events and urged vigilance.

In the U.S., thousands of flights were canceled, affecting major airlines like American, Delta, and United less than an hour after Microsoft resolved a cloud-services-related outage impacting several low-cost carriers.

“Every line is long,” said Chance Ortego, whose flight to New York was canceled.

Public transit systems reported temporary impacts, though most trains and buses continued to run. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority experienced website and internal system outages but later restored trip-planning applications. Similarly, New York City's MTA saw some customer information systems go offline until late afternoon.

Globally, the outages disrupted the London Stock Exchange, caused train delays in the U.K., knocked British broadcaster Sky News off air, forced medical facilities in Europe and the U.S. to cancel services, and affected airports in Europe, Singapore, Hong Kong, and India.
