Lions Offense Can Make Noise
The Detroit Lions did not win a game two season ago. Last year was not much better, although they did increase their win production by 200 percent, improving to 2-14. While that mark is still abysmal, they were able to score Nmadukong Suh, defensive tackle from Nebraska. While that addition will help the defense out immensely, it is the Lions offense that has fans excited. And, for good reason. Through the last three NFL drafts, the Lions have slowly put together a three headed monster, one that can eventually evolve into one of the biggest threats in the NFL.
Let's start with quarterback Matthew Stafford. The number one pick of the 2009 Draft was thrust into a starting role from the onset of his career at the start of last season. While an injury slowed him down, and caused him to miss six games, there were a bunch of good signs for Stafford's future. He took a lot of punishment, due to a lackluster offensive line. Other than the injury, though, he kept on coming. Perhaps the biggest sign for success for the quarterback was a comeback win against the Cleveland Browns. He separated his non throwing shoulder during the ...
... final drive of the game. He missed one play and insisted on coming back in. On the game's final play, he threw a game winning touchdown. Though the Lions were abysmal, it was a lasting image of the NFL season. The kid has a rocket arm, and with better weapons, the interceptions and sacks will come down. Stafford has the it factor to become a star.
He also has Calvin Johnson. Often called by the nickname MegaTron, he has lived up to it. Johnson was forgotten about by some, also due to an injury last season. However, in terms of pure talent, he ranks right up there with Andre Johnson as one of the best wide receivers in the NFL. His size and speed, along with hands of glue, gives Stafford a target that will go up and get the ball when it is thrown his way. Though his stats were down last season, let's not forget the season that he put together the year before. In his second year in 2008, he had an impressive 1,331 yards to go with 12 touchdowns. And that was with Jon Kitna and Daunte Culpepper throwing him the ball. Though he was slowed my injuries last season, he fell just 13 yards short of 1,000. With both he and Stafford healthy, they could lead the NFL in touchdowns between a duo as early as this season.
Another reason why that may be, is because the Lions also have a true threat at running back. The team drafted California running back Jahvid Best early in the first round. Running back may be the position best suited for a rookie to succeed. Best is a shifty back with a lot of speed, who can contribute both running and receiving. His presence will also open things up for Stafford and Johnson, giving them more room to operate.
So, Lions fans, while two wins may not be much to get excited for, there is hope. Two wins may not be a lot, but a three-headed monster sure is. The Lions offense is becoming one.
