Laser Eye Treatment Options
If you have eye problems, you can understand that there are different treatments available for eye problems. Lasik is one of the most recommended laser eye surgery procedures for visual repair and restoration. The advances in this type of surgery have developed and evolved over time. A patient has many more options available to them to consider with the help of a physician. So what are the options available for laser eye treatment? We will discuss each one so that you have the information available to make the decision with your doctor. We will start with Lasik.
Lasik, the original Lasik uses a blade of microkeratome to surgically cut a flap at the cornea to expose the treatment area that will be getting the laser eye treatment. A laser such as an excimer will then burn off the tissue around the cornea. This has always been a standard laser eye treatment for taking care of eye problems and was not customizable at any time to any one patient. This is one option for laser eye surgery. You can achieve a more customized result with newer forms of surgery that are now available to the public. These procedures were not available ...
Intralase is another component of Lasik laser eye surgery. This is a bladeless laser eye treatment for the eyes. This was approved in 2001 and is a replacement for original Lasik. It can be used to not only perform the original Lasik treatment but can now be customized for different patients and their different needs. The original Lasik is still in use. However it is believed that using the Intralase is actually better and more improved when it comes to the surgery itself as well as the results that are desired for the patient as far as sight improvement goes.
Waveform laser eye surgery was approved in 2003.This is considered to be a custom surgery for the eyes. This laser eye treatment is very close to the original Lasik. However it differs in the treatment as this customizes the area of treatment as well as tissue removal by using the newer technology to map out the eye in 3D. This allows for a custom surgery to be performed. It also reduces issues in post surgery such as glare or halos.
Epi-Lasik Laser eye surgery is becoming an option for patients that may not qualify for Lasik or any type of Lasik procedure. This is especially useful if the patient has thin corneas or any other type of eye problem that cannot be treated with the original Lasik laser eye treatment. This doesn't require the flap that original Lasik does but uses a plastic instrument called an epikeratome to separate the layers.
More and more options become available as technology advances. This gives more options to patients looking for corrective laser eye surgery. As technology advances so does the laser eye treatment options.
