Healing Psoriasis the Ayurvedic Way:
A Personal Journey to Better Skin and Well-Being
Living with psoriasis can feel like an endless battle. The constant flare-ups, the irritation, the embarrassment, and the frustration—it’s easy to feel like you’re stuck in a cycle that just won’t break. At Himveda, we understand how challenging this journey can be. That’s why we believe in a holistic, compassionate approach to treating psoriasis—one that doesn’t just focus on the skin but on the body, mind, and spirit as a whole.
If you’re tired of temporary fixes and are ready to try something different, Ayurveda offers a path to lasting relief. Here, we take the time to understand what’s happening inside your body, uncover the root causes of your psoriasis, and guide you toward a healthier, more balanced life.

What Ayurveda Says About Psoriasis: It’s About More Than Just Skin Deep
In Ayurveda, we don’t just see psoriasis as a skin condition. It’s a reflection of deeper imbalances in the body. Think of it as a signal—your body’s way of telling you something is out of balance.
Psoriasis ...
... occurs when your body accumulates toxins (Ama), which can come from several sources: poor digestion, a stressful lifestyle, emotional imbalances, or exposure to environmental toxins. When your digestive fire (Agni) is weak, food and emotions aren’t fully processed, leading to the buildup of Ama in the system. The liver, which is responsible for processing toxins, can become overwhelmed by this Ama. The liver stores these toxins for future processing, but when it becomes overloaded, it releases them into the bloodstream, eventually depositing them in the skin.
• The skin, the largest organ of elimination, tries to expel these toxins through inflammation, dryness, and scaling, which are the hallmark symptoms of psoriasis.

• In Ayurvedic terms, Pitta and Vata doshas are primarily responsible for the symptoms you experience:
• Pitta causes the redness, heat, and inflammation you often see in psoriasis flare-ups.
• Vata contributes to dryness, scaling, and rough patches on the skin.

But it’s not just physical; stress and emotional health also play a huge role. Ayurveda teaches that mental states like anger, jealousy, and frustration can aggravate the condition, causing flare-ups and making it harder to heal.

How Himveda Approaches Psoriasis: A Journey of Healing from the Inside Out
At Himveda, we don’t believe in quick fixes. Instead, we offer a holistic treatment plan that addresses the root causes of psoriasis, restores balance to your body and nourishes your mind and spirit.

Here’s how we approach your healing:
Step 1: Detoxify the Body—Starting with Your Liver
The first step in healing psoriasis is detoxifying the body and clearing the Ama (toxins). Through Ayurveda, we use time-honored techniques to gently cleanse and support your liver, which is responsible for processing and eliminating toxins.

• Dietary Adjustments:
We work with you to create a diet that supports digestion, boosts your Agni (digestive fire), and eliminates foods contributing to toxin buildup. If you have Pitta-dominant psoriasis (characterized by heat and inflammation), we’ll focus on cooling foods that calm the body. For Vata-dominant psoriasis (dryness and scaling), we’ll incorporate nourishing, grounding foods that hydrate and restore balance.

Panchakarma is the primary detox therapy in Ayurveda for psoriasis treatment.
It includes:
• Snehana (Oleation): Intake of ghee (clarified butter) for several days to loosen and bind fat-soluble toxins, which are then transported to the liver for processing. They are converted to bile and then released into the intestine. The bile-carrying toxins are then flushed out in a diarrhea or vomiting cleanse.
• Virechana (Purgation): After ghee therapy, Virechana is performed, a process that induces diarrhea to flush out the toxins from the body through the digestive system.
• Vamana (Emesis): In some cases, Vamana (therapeutic vomiting) may be used to expel toxins through the upper digestive tract.
• Basti (Enemas): Basti helps detoxify the intestines and regulate Vata.
• Rakta Mokshana (Blood Letting): If toxins are lodged more in the blood rather than the liver or skin, a procedure like Rakta Mokshana is used to cleanse the blood directly by releasing stagnant blood, helping to expel toxins and improve circulation. This is a last resort if Panchakarma alone does not provide the desired results.

• Herbal Support: Herbs like Kutki (Picrorhizakurroa), Neem (Azadirachta indica), Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata), and Giloya (Tinospora cordifolia) help purify the blood, reduce inflammation, and support liver detoxification. These natural remedies are gentle yet powerful, helping to calm the body and clear the toxins causing psoriasis.

Step 2: Slow Down the Production of Toxins
Once we’ve started clearing toxins, the next step is to slow down the production of new ones. This involves adopting a lifestyle that promotes balance and supports your body’s natural detox pathways.
• Healthy Eating Habits: At Himveda, we help you identify foods that may aggravate your condition, such as refined sugars, processed foods, or dairy. Eating clean, whole foods and avoiding foods that create Ama can help prevent new toxins from forming.
• Mindful Living: Ayurveda teaches us that mental and emotional states affect our health. So, stress management is crucial. We encourage practices like yoga, meditation, and pranayama (breathing exercises) to help calm the mind, reduce anxiety, and prevent emotional triggers that could worsen psoriasis.
• Lifestyle Tips: We guide you on how to make small but impactful changes in your daily routine—such as getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, and finding time for regular exercise. These habits help support healthy digestion, reduce Ama, and balance the doshas.

Step 3: Balance the Pitta and Vata Doshas
Psoriasis is often a result of an imbalance in the Pitta and Vata doshas, and balancing them is essential for long-term healing.
• For Pitta-Dominant Psoriasis (heat and inflammation): We focus on calming, cooling, and soothing practices. Cooling herbs, gentle exercise, and meditation can help bring your body back to equilibrium.
• For Vata-Dominant Psoriasis (dryness and scaling): We emphasize hydration, grounding foods, and nurturing oils to balance the dry, rough symptoms of Vata. Regular self-care routines, including oil massages and warm baths, can help restore moisture to your skin.

Step 4: Healing the Skin and Promoting Regeneration
Once we’ve cleared toxins and balanced your doshas, the next step is to heal your skin.
• Mahatikthakam Ghee: This special Ayurvedic ghee, enriched with healing herbs, helps nourish and regenerate skin tissues. After your body is detoxified, this ghee supports the regeneration of your skin, making it softer, smoother, and more vibrant.
• Herbal Ointments: We use gentle herbal oils and ointments to soothe the skin, reduce inflammation, and promote healing. These oils are made with natural ingredients that calm your skin and help it recover from the damage caused by psoriasis.

Step 5: Addressing Emotional Health
Psoriasis often has emotional triggers. At Himveda, we believe that healing is not just about the body but also the mind and spirit. We guide you in developing emotional resilience, managing stress, and practicing self-care. Yoga and meditation can help you find emotional balance, while pranayama (breathing exercises) can help release built-up tension and promote deep relaxation.
